Mary W.S. Wong is the Vice Chair of GNSO Council at ICANN and Professor of Law at University of New Hampshire School of Law (formerly Franklin Pierce Law Center).[1] She is the current Chair of the Intellectual Property Graduate Programs at the University of New Hampshire School of Law.[2] She has been at the University of New Hampshire since 2005.[3]

Professor Wong is currently an Associate Fellow of the IP Academy of Singapore. She is also an Advocate & Solicitor at Supreme Court of Singapore. Her area of specialization include Copyright Law and Policy, International Intellectual Property Laws & Policy and Internet Law. At the UNH School of Law, she is also a Member of Dean Search Committee and the Faculty Appointments Committee.[4]

Career History

Law

Prior to joining University of New Hampshire, she was an Associate Professor of Law at Singapore Management University. From 1998 to 2003, Prof. Wong worked as Special Counsel at the Morrison & Foerster LLP. At M&F, she counselled clients from all over the world in a wide range of technology transactions, and provided advice on international and comparative legal developments relating to the Internet, privacy and e-commerce. She has also been a Senior Lecturer at the National University of Singapore.[5] Prof. Wong has been the chair of International Copyright Committee of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Intellectual Property Law Section, and a member of the inaugural Editorial Board for Landslide, the Section’s flagship publication. She has also served on the ABA's Copyright Reform Task Force.

Previously, she has been a member of the New York New Media Association's Programs Committee, the Singapore Government's e-Commerce Consultative Committee, and the Singapore Academy of Law's Membership and Social Committee. Prof. Wong was the co-founder of Project Law Help.[6]

ICANN

Prof. Wong was elected to the GNSO Council for ICANN in 2009, representing ICANN’s Non-Commercial Users Constituency.[7] She is also a member of INTA, and an expert on the topics of Whois, trademark issues regarding new gTLDs, and ICANN governance.[8] She is also the a councillor on the -Non Commercial Stakeholder Groups.[9]

Meetings and Conferences

Professor Wong is also a frequent speaker at conferences in the United States, Europe and Asia. She has attended various ICANN conferences.[10] She actively participates in conferences related to intellectual property and law. She is a regular speaker and panelist at conferences arranged by different universities including Drake University, University of Georgia, Cambridge University and University of Houston. Prof. Wong's current research is focused on the intersection of copyright and human rights, and comparative copyright issues related to user-generated content.
