InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc.) is a non-profit open membership organisation dedicated to protecting and promoting the Internet in New Zealand and fostering a coordinated, cooperative approach to its ongoing development[1].

History[edit | edit source]

InternetNZ was established in 1995. Since 1996, InternetNZ is the recognised delegated manager for the .nz country code top level domain. This delegation is from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), a function managed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The redelegation to InternetNZ occurred in 1996, when Waikato University wished to cease providing domain name registration services due to the increasing demand for domain names in the .nz space, during the years of rapid growth of the Internet. IANA authorised this friendly redelegation, and the New Zealand Government acknowledged this change a number of years later.

On 29 October 2007, InternetNZ and ICANN entered into an arrangement by "exchange of letters" recognising each other and the obligations of the two parties in relation to the operation of the .nz domain name[2].

In 2008, InternetNZ proposed to change it's official name from “The Internet Society of New Zealand” to “Internet New Zealand Inc”[3].

Current Councillors[edit | edit source]

The elected InternetNZ council as at 2010-11-21 are Michael Foley, Hamish MacEwan, Nathan Torkington, Donald Clark, Michael Wallmannsberger, Neil James, Jonny Martin, Don Christie, Lance Wiggs and Dave Moskovitz. The council is headed by Frank March (president) and Jamie Baddeley (vice-president)[4].
