About PIR

The Public Interest Registry is a gTLD (generic top-level domain registry) which has as main responsibility the management of .org TLDs (top level domains) and maintenance of Verisign Global Registry Services. For example, statistics released by PIR in 2010 have shown that there are 8.5 million .org domains and this growth will continue to accelerate. However, this is not surprising since the first .org domain was registered in July 1985. [1]

The PIR is a non-profit organization and was established on 1st of January 2003. This organization maintains contact with ICANN especially regarding the deployment of [[DNSSEC]. Besides ICANN, the PIR and Pamela Miller must stay in touch with IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) which first created the .org TLDs. [2]

The .ORG domain name

In order to understand what PIR deals with, as well as Pamella Miller, here is the simplest definition of a .org domain name: "Catch-all for anything non-commercial and non-government, including nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations, philanthropies, charities, religious organizations, educational and cultural institutions, arts organizations, sports clubs, and others." [3]

Pamela Miller and ICANN

ICANN has the responsibility to announce all important organizations and institutions when new decisions are being taken. In this way, whenever new changes are being implemented that might affect the five current worldwide registries, Pamela Miller is also announced related to the necessary services which may be required. For instance, Pamela Miller received a referral of request for New Registry Service in 18th of April 2008 when it was decided the implementation of DNS Security Extension (DNSSEC). [4]
