SOI is the abbreviation for Statement of Interest. The Statement of Interest is to be completed by any individual who wishes to be selected by the Nominating Committee or NomCom of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers or ICANN. The individual then needs to return this SOI to the NomCom only through electronic submission such as email.

The Statement of Interest asks the individual for different authorizations and consent. The NomCom gives special importance to the SOI and relies heavily on the SOI. The NomCom considers a person who has submitted the SOI as a candidate for selection. However, it doesn’t recognize a person as a candidate, if any information that is required in the SOI for the selection by the NomCom is missing. [1]

Considerations to fill the SOI[edit | edit source]

There are certain things that an individual needs to consider while filling the Statement of Interest. Some of the considerations are mentioned below:

  • The person needs to complete the full Statement of Interest in English and in plain text without attaching any kind of additional documents
  • The individual needs to provide responses to the items of the SOI in the correct order and immediately after the item.
  • The individual also needs to see that the response is adequate to confirm without any kind of reliance on linked resource.
  • The individual also needs to understand that the NomCom will not be able to review any of the materials provided by the individual through reference by URL links in the response.
  • The individual also needs to provide the meaning of all the acronyms used to refer an activity or an organization. The individual also needs to mention the objective of the activity and the organization.
  • The individual needs to limit the responses to not more than 3,500 words and should pay special importance on responses carefully with respect to the nature of the position(s) for which the individual considers to give the NomCom so that it has a good idea about the candidacy.
  • Last but not least, the individual needs to send the complete SOI through email. [2]
