Application Details[edit | edit source]
Excerpts from Response to Question 18:
".BLACK proposes to create an Internet space in which businesses, organizations and individuals can create an Internet identity tied to the color and the concept of black. This will allow for an explosion of creativity and Internet offerings around this concept...
It is important to note that the intention of the TLD is to be associated and used for association with the color black, and not with any social, cultural, or ethnic connotations.
Associating directly with the color black in a TLD will be strongly compelling for some businesses and individuals, but may take some time in catching on in popularity with the general public. As a result of this confluence of interest, we anticipate that we will have 20,000 domains under management (DUMs) after three years....
.BLACK will be an open TLD, generally available to all registrants (except in the Sunrise period)."[3]
Contract Signed[edit | edit source]
On 16 January 2014 Afilias received a Registry Agreement signed by ICANN for .black after passing all the required processes needed to become a Registry Operator for the string.[4]
