ECO or Verband der deutschen Internetwirtschaft e.V is the Association for German Internet Industry. Being the largest Inetrnet Association in Europe and Internet Authority in Germany, it strives for the promotion of commercial as well as non-commercial use of internet. The expertise of organization is Internet and technology including issues like Spam Security Online, Settlement-free IP interconnection, Cloud Computing, infrastructure technologies, content, applications, law and politics.[1] Further it works on the different aspects of Broadband, mobile communication and SaaS.[2] It represents over 300 members including 140 major service providers of Germany.[3] The full list of members can be found here. ECO operates the largest national data exchange called De-CIX (Deutscher Commercial Internet Exchange).[4]


ECO is one of the founding members of EuroCloud and EuroISPA. It is affiliated with ICANN and represents German Internet Industry in ICANN, IGF and RIPE meetings.[5][6] ECO hosts more than 60 events annually and presents eco awards to different Internet related companies.

History

ECO was founded in 1993 as the first German ISP.[7] After being incorporated in 1996 ECO established the Internet Content Task Force - ICTF to advise members in the area of illegal and harmful material, use of the Internet and to work for the betterment of the global network.[8] It than organized De-CIX. It co-founded Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle Multimedia-Anbieter - FSM in 1997 and EuroISPA and EURO-IX in 1998.[9]

Members & Memberships

ECO supports a number of companies in order to promote the Internet in Germany and improve German economy as a whole. Some of the companies supported by ECO include; The Internet Security Platform,[10] TeleTrust,[11] and Spot Spam.[12]

ECO manages anti-spam congress since 2003. It is operator of the internet complaints office, in cooperation with FSM since 2004. In 2005 it became responsible for professional inspection and evaluation of data centres with Data Center Star Audit and operator of Certified Senders Alliance, a white list project for bulk email senders, in cooperation with the German Dialogmarketing Verband e.V.[13]
