.ею is one of the IDN ccTLDs for the European Union. In Bulgarian language, the string has a transliteration equivalent to "eu" in English. The string is expressed using the Cyrillic script. It is managed by the European Registry for Internet Domains EURid.[1]

Delegation History[edit | edit source]

On April 22, 2002, the European Union adopted Regulation 733/2002 to establish the .eu top-level domain, which officially came into effect on April 30. On May 21, 2003, the European Commission, in coordination with EU Member States, designated EURid to manage the .eu TLD. The formal delegation of the domain's management to EURid took place in May 2005.

Later, on May 5, 2010, the European Union applied to the ICANN’s IDN ccTLD Fast Track for recognition of the strings "ευ" (Greek) and "ею" (Cyrillic) as representations of the EU in their respective scripts.

In 2012, the Cyrillic string "ею" was approved by the DNS Stability Panel, while the Greek string "ευ" was initially rejected due to a high risk of user confusion. The Greek string was approved only in 2019.

On February 12, 2016, EURid was delegated the management of the .ею TLD, officially representing the European Union in Cyrillic script.[1]
