Delegated to the DNS root zone on November 18, 2005 and opened for public registration on December 19, 2005, .cat was among the first GeoTLDs created for a linguistic community Administered by the non-profit Fundació puntCAT under the oversight of ICANN, registrations are available only to individuals and organizations demonstrating use or promotion of the Catalan language and culture.
