ISOC.AM has been a member of ccNSO since 2008.

History[edit | edit source]

The “Internet Society” NGO was officially registered with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia in 1995, following its founding meeting on August 4, 1994. The establishment of Armenia's own domain name zone, ".am," became possible after Armenia's participation in the INET93 international conference. To meet the primary requirements set forth at the conference and create a national domain name zone, a professional initiative group was formed. This group’s efforts led to the registration of the “Internet Society” NGO (ISOC), which has continued to operate to this day.

The “Internet Society” NGO's activities were further discussed at the third international conference, INET 95. In 1996, under the direction of ARMINCO LLC, the Armenian Information Network Center (AMNIC) was established and granted the authority by IANA to manage the ".am" top-level domain.

Currently, AMNIC operates within the structure of the “Internet Society” NGO, maintaining a separate system and directly overseeing the management of Armenian domains. The official launch date of the “.am” domain name zone is recognized as August 26, 1994. Since then, the ".am" domain has developed steadily and effectively.

In line with global developments, ISOC also created the ".հայ" ccTLD, which was launched on May 5, 2016. As the Internet evolved, the functions of IANA were transferred to the newly formed Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in 1998. The management of Armenia's national domain was reconfirmed in 2000, and a formal agreement between ISOC and ICANN was signed in 2007.

The “Internet Society” NGO is also one of the founding members of the Armenian Internet Traffic Exchange (ARMIX) Foundation. ARMIX facilitates the exchange of Internet traffic among information service providers in Armenia, ensuring the independence of the Armenian Internet domain name zone and improving communication with international channels.[2]

Internet Society NGO and Internet Society Armenia Chapter[edit | edit source]

The Internet Society Armenia Chapter and the "Internet Society" NGO (which is defined by the first as the Armenian Internet Registry) are different entities, although their names are similar. Both organizations have a "cooperation agreement" that was signed on June 4, 2018, in which they agree to cooperate in many instances relating to Internet and Internet governance in Armenia. The document can be seen in its entirety here.
