AC stands for Advisory Committees of the the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. It was established based on the provisions set forth in Article XI of the Bylaws of the corporation. The committees may compose of the following membership; directors only, directors and non-directors, or non-directors only as well as non-voting or alternative members. The Advisory Committee is not authorized to take action in behalf of the internet governing body. It's primary responsibility is to report findings and recommendations to the ICANN Board.[1]
Specific Committees
ICANN has the following Advisory Committees:[2]
- Governmental Advisory Committee- Provides advice to ICANN regarding its activities that are related to government issues, policies,laws and regulations and international agreements.
- Security and Stability Advisory Committee-Provides advice to ICANN on internet security particularly regarding the internet naming address and allocation system.
- Root Server System Advisory Committee-Its main responsibility is to examine the security aspects of the root name serves of the Domain Name System (DNS) and advice ICANN regarding the issues affecting it including its operational requirements.
- At-Large Advisory Committee-Provides advice regarding the activities of ICANN that have direct impact to the interests of individual Internet users.
The specific advisory committees of ICANN has their own procedural rules, quorum, officers and members. The members and officers of the specific committees do not receive any compensation, however the ICANN Board will reimburse the the necessary expenses spent by the committee members while performing their obligation in connection with ICANN activities.
