Featured Topic: Brand TLD bailouts

Last year saw more Brand TLDs head for the exits as companies sent termination notices for a variety of strings. From industry heavyweights to heavy industrial, financial services to consumables, eighteen companies initiated termination of their custom TLDs in 2020. In many cases, only the mandatory NIC domain was active in the abandoned domain space.

On the inception of the .brand TLD program, a large number of companies applied for strings for trademark protection purposes. Companies continue to struggle to find a purpose for their brand TLDs, with .creditunion being a notable exception: the registry has over 500 registered domains serving credit unions, credit union service organizations, and businesses with a significant nexus to credit union activities.
