.web generic top-level domain issue[edit | edit source]
In 1995, Christopher Ambler's company Image Online Design, submitted the first request to own obtain top level domain, .web. [5] According to Ambler "I was writing a check for $3,000 to Network Solutions for 30 domain names (in those days, it was $100 each for 2 years) and I thought, Wait a minute, this is silly – I can run a zone server just as easy as NSI can!" [6] So he applied for a delegation for .Web through is company IOD (Image Online Design) and launched .web, a new unrestricted top level domain after recieving permission from IANA.
IOD has been trying to get their domain into the official root, through several plans to admit new top-level domains. When ICANN accepted applications for new TLDs in 2000 , IOD's application was not approved neither officially rejected.[7] Ambler however, is looking forward for the next selection process stating "I think it’s safe to say that our .Web application is still pending and we’re first in line once ICANN resumes the process. IOD is absolutely ready to move forward with .Web" [8]
