J. Scott is an intellectual property attorney from Charlotte, North Carolina. He is a former President of the IPC and one of the drafters of the UDRP. Currently he serves as the Senior Director of Global Brands & Trademarks at Yahoo! Inc.[1]

J. Scott received his undergraduate degree from Baylor University and his Juris Doctor cum laude in 1992 from the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at The University of Louisville, where he was a member of The Brandeis Honor Society and President of the Moot Court Board.[2]
Career History[edit | edit source]
Prior to joining Adams Evans P.A., J. Scott served as Corporate Counsel for Fruit of the Loom, where he was responsible for managing the international intellectual property portfolios for Fruit of the Loom and its associate companies (The B.V.D. Licensing Corporation, Gitano, Pro Player, and Salem Sportswear, Inc.). From June 1995 until November 1996, J. Scott served as an associate in the intellectual property group at Moore & Van Allen, PLLC in Durham, NC. J. Scott joined Adams Evans P.A. in November of 1996 and continues to concentrate his practice in the areas of trademark, copyright, unfair competition and Internet law. J. Scott carries an "AV" rating by Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory.[3]
Work In ICANN[edit | edit source]
J. Scott served as a member of the five member drafting committee that assisted the staff at ICANN with the drafting of the Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy ("UDRP") and the Rules of Procedure for the UDRP. This policy is now used by the World Intellectual Property Organization ("WIPO") and others to resolve disputes between domain name registrants and trademark owners. J. Scott is an active member of the International Trademark Association, where he has served as Chair of Internet Committee during the 2004/2005 term.[4] Beginning in January 2006, J. Scott became a member of the Board of Directors for INTA, where he served on the Executive Committee. From November 2003 until October 2005, he also served as President of the Intellectual Property Constituency ("IPC"), one of the seven constituencies that assists ICANN's Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) in developing policies for domain names. From January 2002 until March 2003, J. Scott also represented the IPC as a member of the Names Council, the 19 member counsel that manages the policy development process for domain names. J. Scott frequently lectures on trademark and Internet policy issues as well as domain name dispute resolution.[5]
