The ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 (PP-22), in Bucharest, Romania, started on September 26 and will run through October 14, 2022. This conference is significant for its secretary-general election, which was between two candidates with starkly different views on how to lead the technical body. Of the 193 Member States, 172 voted in a secret ballot and elected Doreen Bogdan-Martin of the United States with 139 votes against Rashid Ismailov's 25. Doreen Bogdan-Martin is a former U.S. Commerce Department expert on telecommunications who joined the ITU in the 1990s. Rashid Ismailov is the former deputy minister for Russia’s telecommunications ministry.
