More information:

.media is a proposed TLD in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The proposed Donuts application succeeded and was delegated to the Root Zone on 11 April 2014.[1]

Applicants

  1. Donuts (Grand Clen, LLC) - This applicant submitted a Public Interest Commitment, which can be downloaded here.

Previous Applicants

  1. Tucows - WITHDRAWN in July 2013.[2] It withdrew its applications weeks after Uniregistry, due to a buy-out by Donuts. Apparently, Tucows had cut its own deal to remove Uniregistry from the contention set; Uniregistry CEO, Frank Schilling, remarked that he would never have struck the deal with Tucows had he known that it would in turn cut its own deal with Donuts.[3]
  2. Uniregistry, Corp.[4]

Deal between Tucows and Donuts

The Donuts buy-out of .media and .marketing from Tucows was the subject of a comedic video posted to OpenSRS's YouTube channel, featuring both Elliot Noss and Jonathon Nevett:

Contract Signed

On 06 March 2014, Donuts received a Registry Agreement signed by ICANN for .media after passing all the required processes needed to become a Registry Operator for the string.[5]

Delegation and Availability

.media was delegated to the Root Zone of the DNS on 11 April, 2014, completing the successful application for the string.[1]
