Dr. V. C. Vivekanandan is the Director of the Legal Information Institute of India and Professor and Head of the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) at the University of Law at Hyderabad. He also serves as IP Chair Professor of the Ministry of Human Resources Information and Adjunct Visiting Professor at the University of Buffalo Business School in New York. He is a member of the ICANN Nominating Committee (NomCom); his term expires in 2012.[1] He also participated during the IGFInternet Governance Forum]] (IGF) which was held Hyderabad in 2008.[2]

Dr. Vivekanandan has an extensive experience in academic research and advocacy. He is expert in the field of Intellectual Property Rights, Internet Laws and international Trade laws.[3]


ICANN Involvement[edit | edit source]

In 2008, he was elected as the ALAC member from the Asia Pacific region. After his term, in 2010, he was selected by the ALAC to serve as member of ICANN's NomCom until 2012.

Career History[edit | edit source]

In 1992, Dr. Vivekanandan started his teaching career as a faculty member of the National Law School of India, Bangalore. In 1992, he started working for the Dalal Street Journal as Bureau Head. He later became Editor and Publisher of Inde Global Communications. From 1998 to 2001, he returned to teaching at the National Law School of India.[4] He also taught Internet governance and cyber law to law students and working professionals in four cities in India. Since 2001, he has been serving as Professor and Head of NALSAR Proximate Education, University of Law and IP Chair Professor of Intellectual Property Rights of Ministry of Human Resources Development for the government of India. Prior to this position, he was the Dean of Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law at IIT Kharagpur and Head of the Distance Education Department of the National Law School of India in Bangalore.[5] In 2007, he became an Adjunct Visiting Professor at the University of Buffalo, Business School. In 2008, he was one of the participants at the Hague Conference on Private International Law on Online Jurisdiction Issues on Legal information. In 2010, he became the Director of the Legal Information Institute of India. At present, he is a research fellow at Maastricht University, School of Law in Netherlands under the 2010 ICCSR NWO Exchange Scholarship Program. [6] He is also an Honorary Advisor for IP Dome, a firm specializing in providing IP management services for companies.[7] He is a member of the Ethics Committee at AP Venture Capital Fund, member of the IP Policy Committee of Indian Institute of Technology, and Advisory Member of the Copyright office for the government of India.[8]

Dr. Vivekanandan received his Doctorate Degree in Intellectual Property Rights from the National Law School of India. He also holds a M.L. in Corporate Law and Securities from Nagarjuna University, M.A. and MPhil in Public Administration from Madra Christian College and University in Madras respective. He received his B. Sc. From Presidency College.[9]
