.tirol is a new GeoTLD and Community Priority Application proposed by Punkt Tirol GmbH to ICANN's New gTLD Program for Tirol, Federal State of Austria. Nic.at was selected by Punkt Tirol GmbH to provide back-end registry solutions for the .tirol domain space.[1] Their application succeeded and was delegated to the Root Zone on 4 June 2014.[2]
.tirol will be independent top-level domain of the Community of Tirolers worldwide on the Internet. The regional domain names available with the .tirol TLD are concise and create an identity for citizens, companies and institutions. Those providing and looking for information, goods and services in and on Tirol can thus intuitively come together. The .tirol domain names should strengthen the feeling of community amongst Tirolers, improve communication and make interaction easier, thus providing a stimulus for innovation and development. Hopefully, Tirol will become more attractive as a region to visit, as a commercial location, and as a place to live.[3]
Along with TLDs such as .osaka and .paris, .tirol falls into the new category of GeoTLDs. The issue of new top level domains in general, and .tirol in particular, has been discussed at various ICANN-Meetings since 2005.
The TLD is a Community Priority Application: "Exclusively eligible to register a domain name under the top-level domain .TIROL is any natural person, legal person, organization or association of persons, if they can demonstrate an economic, cultural, touristical, historical, social or any other connection to the Austrian Federal State of Tirol...The applicant Punkt Tirol GmbH has entered into an agreement with the Federal State of Tirol to operate .TIROL under license by the state." Verification methods do not seem to be explicitly stated within the application.[4]
Contract Signed[edit | edit source]
On 24 April 2014 Punkt Tirol GmbH received a Registry Agreement signed by ICANN for .tirol after passing all the required processes needed to become a Registry Operator for the string.[5]
