The ICANN Studienkreis is an open network composed of experts in the internet industry dedicated in organizing high-level expert seminars on issues regarding ICANN development and internet governance. Individuals and constituencies from the private sector, government, academic institutions, the civil society and the media participate in the yearly conferences organized by ICANN Studienkreis..[1]

Background

Wolfgang Kleinwächter, Professor for International Communication Policy and Regulation at the Department for Media and Information Sciences of the Unversity of Aarhus initiated the establishment of ICANN Studienkreis. [2] Medienstadt Leipzig e.V. / Netcom Institute, a member of the At Large Structure helped to establish the network in 1999 which was originally intended for the internet community speaking the German language.ICANN Studienkreis was primarily supported by ccTLD registries namely DENIC (.de), SWITCH (.ch) & (.li) and Nic.at (.at).[3]

ICANN Studienkreis became international and it was able to establish partnerships with Afilias, Verisign and joker.com.
