.sh is a ccTLD which is allocated to the island of Saint Helena, a British overseas territory. It is managed by the Government of St. Helena,[1] through NIC.SH.

Rules and Restrictions[edit | edit source]

Anyone can register directly under .sh.

No .sh domain may be used, directly or indirectly, for any purpose that is sexual or pornographic or that is against the statutory laws of any Nation.

In the event that any .sh domain is used either directly or indirectly for the purpose of directing unsolicited electronic mail ("spam mail") either as the originator of the spam mail or as the address to which readers of spam mail are referred, then NIC.SH reserves the right to send a notice to the applicant to cease such spam mail. Should the applicant of the .sh domain name fail to adhere to the conditions contained in such notice, then NIC.SH reserves the right to suspend or delete the operation of the offending .sh domain name.[2]

Second-level Domains[edit | edit source]

Registered under Second-level Domains is possible only for St. Helena residents[2], and are offered for free.

For the following SLDs, these requirements must be fulfilled: Individuals must provide a copy of a British passport issued to British Overseas Territories citizens of Saint Helena. Companies in Saint Helena must show a copy of their Company Registry issued by St. Helena.

  • .co.sh
  • .com.sh
  • .org.sh
  • .net.sh
  • .nom.sh

To register under ".edu.sh", valid documentation must be provided, showing that the applicant is a recognized educational institution in St. Helena, which includes schools for primary, undergraduate, and secondary education.

To register under ".gov.sh", valid documentation must be provided, proving that the applicant is a recognized government entity in St. Helena.

It is not possible to register an offered SLD as a Third-level Domain, e.g. "org.com.sh" or ".com.org.sh".[3]

Characters[edit | edit source]

For domain names directly under .sh, certain one or two-letters are possible. They are, however, controlled.

For Third-level Domains, all one letter domains (i.e. [a-z].xxx.sh) are reserved to cater for possible future sub-domain usage. Two-letters domain names are available.[2]

.sh domain names support IDN characters, as presented in this document.[4]
