Academic Data Science Alliance (ADSA) is a nonprofit professional association for data science and AI. They are a community made up of data science leaders, practitioners, and educators[1] who aim to integrate data science and AI best practices in higher education.[2]
About ADSA
The Academic Data Science Alliance (ADSA) community originated with the Moore-Sloan Data Science Environments (MSDSEs),[2], a partnership built with the goal to advance data-intensive scientific discovery[3] by the Alfred P Sloan Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Micaela Parker, executive director of University of Washington's eScience Institute at the time, worked with the foundations on this project. Both Foundations, recognizing they could not afford to invest in the same extent in all of the universities throughout the United States, backed Parker in launching the Academic Data Science Alliance, which was launched in 2019.
In the beginning, Parker tried to keep ADSA a more informal group with a close, grass-roots connection to its members, the ADSA has gradually become a professional society.[4]
Objectives
- support leadership and professional development in academic data science;
- foster interdisciplinary collaboration between fields using data science;
- promote ethical, inclusive, and socially responsible data science research and education;
- build a vibrant community for sharing challenges, opportunities, and innovations.
Membership
ADSA membership is open to academic programs, departments/schools, centers, academic consortia, government labs, and any non-profit groups supporting higher education. There are different membership tiers, each with more benefits. Detailed information can be checked here.
Activities
ADSA's activities include:
- hosting annual meetings and conferences to foster exchange among academic data scientists;
- providing resources, toolkits, and community forums for new and emerging data science programs;
- Facilitating collaboration across institutions to advance shared priorities in education and research;
- Advocating for ethical data practices, open science, and inclusivity within the academic community.
Events
ADSA has two flagship events, the ADSA Annual Meeting and the Data Science Leadership Summit, both occurring annually.
The Academic Data Science Alliance Annual Meeting brings together data science practitioners and educators—including graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, staff researchers, and faculty—to discuss shared challenges in research, education, and training. Open to all disciplines, it features presentations on data science research and pedagogy and offers networking opportunities for students and postdoctoral researchers seeking faculty positions.
The Data Science Leadership Summit is a gathering of leaders from established and emerging data science programs, along with faculty interested in developing new initiatives. The event provides a forum for sharing best practices, discussing common challenges and opportunities, and examining approaches to training future data scientists. Participation in the Summit is by invitation only.[5]
