DNS AXE is a non-profit organization focused on mitigating DNS abuse related to the online distribution of illicit pharmaceutical products. The organization advocates for voluntary, coordinated action within the Internet infrastructure industry to address domain names that present a clear risk to human health.[1]
DNS AXE advocates for all Domain Name System (DNS) Operators to play a proactive role in advancing solutions beyond ICANN’s technical scope, while honoring existing agreements. This involves collaboratively developing a set of standards and tools to substantiate a pilot Trusted Notifier Network across the industry.[2]
It was founded by Ron Andruff.
Activities[edit | edit source]
DNS AXE coordinates a pilot project based on a clearinghouse model designed to operationalize interventions against domains associated with the harmful sale or promotion of pharmaceuticals. The clearinghouse is intended to ingest and assess data, and to vet and manage a structured ecosystem of:
- Trusted Reporters: entities that provide evidence of DNS-based pharmaceutical harm;
- Validators: experts who verify submitted reports for accuracy and severity;
- Notifiers: actors who communicate validated cases to registries, registrars, or relevant stakeholders.
The organization promotes action at the domain name level only where there is:
- A well-evidenced and credible risk of immediate harm to human life;
- Justifiable cause for prompt disruption or cessation of harmful activity;
- A coordinated response that respects the scope and responsibility of DNS actors.[1]
