History[edit | edit source]

In 1997, when Internet Technology was rapidly developing and there was an increasing demand for domain names to be used within emerging cultures and economies, the concept of domain name registration was introduced to the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica by the DotDM Corporation.

On February 2nd, 2001, the .dm name was introduced to the global marketplace by .dm Registry. It was felt that the .dm domain name, supported by strategic promotional efforts directed at clearly identified niche markets, was perfectly poised to serve the needs of a variety of Internet interests spanning numerous languages and cultures. Over the years, showcasing the many offerings of the Commonwealth of Dominica including International Business, Digital Communications and unique Tourism Resources, the .dm domain name has embraced diverse markets.

Since the official re-delegation by IANA in 2007, the DotDM Corporation has been negotiating and forging the most viable and responsible relationships aimed at establishing a unique presence for the Commonwealth of Dominica in the cyber-marketplace. In addition, ;dm Registry has supported the development of various multi-sectoral Rural Community groups and related activities.

On June 25th, 2012 at the ICANN Meeting in Prague, the DotDM Corporation re-launched the .dm Registry Platform through partnership with Key-Systems GmbH and KSregistry GmbH. Currently, .dm domains are currently offered by thirteen registrars, including Key-Systems' Reseller portal RRPproxy. Applications continue to be accepted for strategically selected Registrars and re-sellers who are committed in Policy to supporting the Goals and Mission of the DotDM Corporation's Registry.

Another milestone for the DotDM Corporation was attained in August 2014 with deployment in Dominica of the first Community DNS node in the Caribbean and South America, thereby improving internet security, speed and resilience for .dm domain names; "a bold and visionary move" as the DotDM Corporation continues to champion internet governance for Dominica.

Four years later, on August 2nd, 2018 another milestone was recorded with the merger of Key-Drive SA, the parent company of Key Systems Gmbh and CentralNIC Group PLC. DotDM Registry migrated onto the CentralNIC Registry Platform in October 2019.

In February 2021, a new opportunity was presented and DotDM Registry partnered with Uniregistry UNR as provider of Registry Backend Service. Work towards deployment of DNSSEC for signing and validation of .dm domain names commenced and was finalized on December 1st, 2021.

Uniregistry UNR was recently acquired by Tucows, Inc. representing further development opportunities in partnership with DotDM Corporation towards improving Internet Governance for ccTLD .dm and the Commonwealth of Dominica.[1]
