KeyDrive S.A. was a Luxembourg-based holding group formed in 2011 from the combination of Key-Systems (registrar/registry services) and NameDrive (monetization). In 2018, KeyDrive was acquired by CentralNic Group plc (rebranded as Team Internet Group in 2023).[1] After the acquisition, “KeyDrive” ceased to be used as a public group brand. Most registrar, reseller and registry brands that KeyDrive built or bought still operate under their own names inside Team Internet Group, preserving the portfolio’s multi-brand strategy, like Key-Systems[2], BrandShelter [3] and Moniker.[4]

Expansion[edit | edit source]

In 2012, KeyDrive S.A. purchased Moniker and SnapNames, providers of products and services for all stages of the domain name lifecycle including registration, management, appraisal, sales, escrow and acquisition. With this acquisition, they became the sixth largest registrar network in the world for gTLDs at the time.[5] SnapNames was sold in 2014 to Web.com.[6]

On February 9, 2017, KeyDrive announced the acquisition of backend registry provider OpenRegistry.[7]

Reverse takeover by CentralNic[edit | edit source]

On July 16, 2018 CentralNic Group plc (now Team Internet Group) announced an agreement to acquire 100% of KeyDrive for up to USD 55 million. The deal completed on August 2, 2018, constituting a reverse takeover under London’s AIM rules. KeyDrive founder Alexander Siffrin became Group COO and a significant shareholder in the enlarged group.[8]
