The Temporary Specification for gTLD Registration Data (adopted by the ICANN Board on 17 May 2018) established temporary requirements for gTLD registry operators and registrars to comply with the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) without breaking existing ICANN contractual requirements and community-developed policies. The Temporary Specification provides a single, unified interim model that ensures a common framework for handling registration data and maintaining the WHOIS system while the GNSO determines whether to adopt it as a consensus policy or develop an alternative policy. ICANN's stated objective of the Temporary Specification is to comply with the GDPR, while maintaining the WHOIS system to the greatest extent possible. The Expedited Policy Development Process on the Temporary Specification for gTLD Registration Data followed, one of whose outputs has led to a discussion over whether ICANN should offer an SSAD.
- On March 1, the CENTR Board suspended the membership of the Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ immediately.
- Also on March 1, Rolling Stone reported that Ukrainian officials asked ICANN in an email to revoke domains issued in Russia and shut down primary DNS servers in the country, effectively barring access to Russian internet sites and potentially taking the entire country offline. Andrii Nabok, a Ukraine representative to the GAC, sent the request.
- In response, on March 2, 2022, ICANN CEO Goran Marby denied the request, explaining that "...the Internet is a decentralized system. No one actor has the ability to control it or shut it down...Our mission does not extend to taking punitive actions, issuing sanctions, or restricting access against segments of the Internet -- regardless of the provocations."
- ICANN 73, ICANN's community forum meeting, is happening this week!
