New Content: Focus on Africa
Recently, ICANN has begun a more focused outreach to the African continent to better serve and represent its population. It is a widely accepted fact that the developing world has not been heretofore addressed in the development of execution of a comprehensive strategy. Recent developments have followed the appointment of ICANN CEO Fadi Chehadé in September, 2012. He first noted frustrations from the African and Latin American delegations following meetings before he took office at ICANN Prague saying that they were yearning to be reached out to and had felt largely ignored. A working group was created, including African leaders such as former ICANN Director Nii Quaynor, to create a new strategy for ICANN's outreach and work in the region. At ICANN 45 in Toronto, ICANN released its "New Approach to Africa", as a document and plan open to public comment. It lays out clear goals and milestones and an action plan for the first 12 months. It is a collaborative effort by AFRINIC, Africa's Regional Registry for Internet Number Resources and the ICANN community. ICANN appointed a well regarded Egyptian expert on Internet Governance, Tarek Kamel, to serve as Senior Advisor to the President on Global Engagement, he is the first senior ICANN advisor to come from the developing world. ICANNWiki Sponsor, Registry.Africa (ZACR), has sponsored a brief Introduction to the African Delegation within ICANN, as the whole community looks for greater outreach to, and participation from, Africa. |
