.wien is a new GeoTLD proposed by punkt.wien GmbH to ICANN's New gTLD Program for the City of Vienna. Nic.at was selected by punkt.wien GmbH to provide back-end registry solutions for the .wien domain space. The proposed application succeeded and was delegated to the Root Zone on 03 January, 2014.[1]
.wien is a proposed new top level domain (TLD) for all those who want to demonstrate an economic, cultural, touristical, historical, social or any other connection to the Austrian capital WIEN - Vienna, Austria. Along with TLDs such as .cat, .asia and .eu, .wien and other proposed TLDs fall into the new category of GeoTLDs. The issue of .wien in particular and TLDs as a whole has been discussed at ICANN Meetings since 2005.
The Community Priority Application has the requisite letter of support from the local government. "Exclusively eligible to register a domain name under the top-level domain .WIEN is any natural person, legal person, organization or association of persons, if they can demonstrate that they have an economic, cultural, touristical, historical, social or any other connection to the Austrian capital Wien (Vienna)." Registration will involved implicitly signing an agreement that affirms a legitimate connection to the city of Vienna (Wien) and intention to use the name in good-faith.[2]
