A Community TLD is a gTLD that is operated for the benefit of a clearly delineated community. The option was developed in the New gTLD Program.
- On February 28, Elliot Silver reported that NameCheap stopped taking payments from Russia for its products and services and allowed no new Russian customers to buy from them; told its existing Russian customers to remove their services from their platform by March 6, 2022; stopped selling Russian and Belarusian TLDs; and blocked Russian IP addresses from accessing the company’s website. CEO Richard Kirkendall explained that this Russian service termination was in response to the "Russian regime's war crimes and human rights violations in Ukraine."
- Also on February 28, ICANN announced that it would install and operate two new ICANN Managed Root Server (IMRS) clusters in Africa, one of which will be in Kenya. It is ICANN's first-of-this-kind investment in Africa. The clusters will ensure that Internet queries from Africa can be answered within the region and not have to depend on networks and servers in other parts of the world, thus reducing latency and improving user experience. The clusters will also reduce the impact of potential DDoS Attacks by relying on separate locations and providing higher bandwidth and data processing capacity.
- On March 1, Rolling Stone reported that Ukrainian officials asked ICANN to revoke domains issued in Russia and shut down primary DNS servers in the country, effectively barring access to Russian internet sites and potentially taking the entire country offline.
