History[edit | edit source]

On November 27, 2013, an application was made to the “IDN Fast Track” process to have the string “عراق” recognized as representing Iraq.

On May 13, 2014, a review by the IDN Fast Track DNS Stability Panel found that "the applied-for string ... presents none of the threats to the stability or security of the DNS identified in Module 4 of the Fast Track implementation plan, and presents an acceptably low risk of user confusion". The request for the string to represent Iraq was subsequently approved.

On September 23, 2014, ICANN announced that the proposed IDN ccTLD string for the Republic of Iraq successfully passed the string evaluation.[2] [3]

On November 23, 2014, Communications and Media Commission (CMC) commenced a request to ICANN for delegation of “عراق” as a top-level domain.[2] The ICANN Board, after reviewing and evaluating the request, approved the delegation in October 2015.[4]
