The [[Domain Name System]] (DNS) is the system used to translate alphanumeric domain names into [[Internet Protocol]] numbers. Simply put, the DNS converts the names typed in the Web browser address bar into [[IP Address]]es. The DNS is made up of many servers and databases which, through a series of lookups in various caches, configure [[Domain Name]]s into [[IP Address]]es. The Domain Name System is a distributed database arranged hierarchically; its purpose is to provide a layer of abstraction between Internet services (web, email, etc.) and the numeric addresses (IP addresses) used to uniquely identify any given machine on the Internet. The DNS associates a variety of information with the domain names assigned and, most importantly, translates the domain names meaningful to humans into the numerical identifiers that locate the desired destination.

A [[Name Collision]] describes the circumstance in which a term attempting to reach a private [[Domain Name]] results in resolving to a public Domain Name unintentionally. Private domain names are used in Intranets and in many corporations and organizations throughout the world. A domain name on a private network that matches a name in the public Internet can create security risks, confusion, and systems failure. Although the Name Collision issue is not new, a renewed interest in the issue came about in 2013 as [[ICANN]]'s [[New gTLD Program]] was preparing to delegate hundreds of new domain names to the [[Root Zone]]. The topic was debated fiercely within the ICANN community when a report by Interisle Consulting was prepared for and released by ICANN.<br /><br />

Getting started is as simple as requesting an account, which will be approved as long as it does not appear to be intended for spam or malice. Then, make sure to read our short content guide to get a feel for what belongs in the wiki. You may also want to have a look at some data source suggestions on where to find reliable data. Our focus this season is: ccTLDs. Our community is working together on surfacing information about these stakeholders, including going over documents, blog posts, Working Groups (including the already great article on Working Groups!), and all other relevant information.
